Most visitors to this part of Karnataka drive straight past Srirangapatna on their way between Mysore and Bengaluru. That’s a mistake. This small river island, formed where two arms of the Cauvery meet, was once the capital of Tipu Sultan’s kingdom, and it still holds enough forts, temples and battle sites to fill a slow, satisfying half-day — especially when you’re already staying close by on KRS Main Road.

Why Srirangapatna Is Worth the Detour

The island’s history runs deeper than most people expect. It was a Ganga-dynasty settlement before it became a Vijayanagara stronghold, and later the fortified capital from which Hyder Ali and then Tipu Sultan resisted the British through four separate wars. The final siege, in 1799, ended Tipu’s rule and reshaped the political map of South India. Walking the fort walls today, with the river running quietly on both sides, it’s easy to see why the site was considered nearly impossible to take.

Good to know: Srirangapatna is roughly a 15–20 minute drive from Hotel Four Meadows on KRS Main Road, making it an easy add-on to a Mysore day rather than a separate trip.
